Raw hide and bones for dogs?

all of our dogs have always had beef bones and raw hide, i live in rural nevada and grew up with ranch dogs and i have an 11 year old border collie who eats them like crazy but now i'm hearing they need to be supervised, whats the deal?Raw hide and bones for dogs?
I have had 4 dogs in my lifetime all have had rawhide, pork ,beef bones and pigs ears... All that said they had all long healthy lives from 11 to almost 15 yrs...We gave them apple cores Peas in the shell and 1 loved popcorn... As long as you give in moderation and watch them things should be fine... I now have a pup 8 months old and she enjoys all of the above...
rawhide is not meant to be digested. if the dog doesn't bite it into small enough pieces to be passed, they will just sit in the stomach. i spoke with a vet not long ago that had just done surgery to remove rawhide from a dogs stomach.

they also use framaldahyde (sp?) to give it a shelf life of about a million yrs.

about 20 yrs ago i gave one to my border collie. he peeled off a large strip and tried to swallow it. i had to use hot dog tongs to remove it.

i always go with the real bones from pet supply stores.Raw hide and bones for dogs?
Feed your dog raw meat and raw bones (like what their wolf brothers eat in the wild) and they'll get everything they need without you having to worry about the drawbacks of commercialized food and factory-processed chewie-treats.

*raw does NOT mean spoiled.
We never had problems with our dogs and rawhide either, but I guess it can swell up and cause an intestinal blockage if they eat too much of it. Beef bones we've always given our dogs and haven't heard anything bad about them - it's poultry bones that you have to watch out for, as they are hollow and splinter and can get caught in their throat, etc.
Dogs tend to not chew them very well, and they can choke on them, or they can get stuck and cause serious damage.

I give dried sweet potato as an alternative to raw hide.
Beef bones tend to chip in undesirable ways. They can stab a dogs gums, or possibly choke on the fragments. Dogs have eaten bones for centuries though, and you can't protect dogs (or children) from all the possible dangers in the world. You can't stop anything from being what it was meant to be. Thinking about it that way kinds of helps me appreciate the time I have with my loved ones. People and animals....... Sorry..... Got a little off the subject there. LoL! Peace!

Edit: "Dog Safe" treats offer no guarantees either. I don't know if you heard about what happened a while back with the "Greenies" dog treats clogging intestinal tracks. They have resolved that issue, but the point remains the same. Live is short! Live it up!
Rawhide is at least 15% indigestible. Dogs have much weaker stomachs than humans, and if they swallow the rawhide, there is always a chance that a piece of it will become stuck. This can lead to complications, expensive vet visits, and even death!

Bones that are pet-safe are fine, as long as they are large enough to be safely handled by the dog who is chewing them. Never give cooked poultry bones to a dog, as they can splinter and cause damage to the mouth and digestive tract.

There are other alternatives to rawhide available widely in pet stores. Nylabone now makes a whole line of "digestibles" that help to remove plaque and satisfy dogs' chewing urges.
My dogs have never had an issue. Sure, supervise if you wnat, but if your dog has never had the urge to chow down on a huge chunk, then it is doubtful she will develop the urge at 11 years of age. I prefer raw bones to the smoked ones, and rawhide is ok if it's made in the usa. (make sure you check!)
Sometimes rawhide gets swallowed in chunks that are too big for your dog to digest. They then get passed into your dog's intestine which can cause twisting and such of these organs. All too often the dog then has to have an operation to have it removed. As long as your dog isn't swallowing big pieces or chunks then I wouldn't worry too much. If it hasn't been a problem yet then it might not be in the future however the opposite can occur. Just be away and watch for any signs of discomfort in your dog. I wouldn't give more than one a day to your dog to be on the safe side.
It is the 1# killer of dogs because oof all the problems it can cause raw meat can have bacteria that can make your dog barf I just steer clear of any bones or raw meat or rawhide just give them meat flavered chews that say they are diegestible my lab aussie mix loves the milkbone steak large chews
My vet says she's seen way more dogs with chunks of Nylabones stuck in their stomachs and intestines than she's ever seen with blockages from rawhides.

Just some food for thought...
