The Lovely Bones - what made Mr. Harvey crazy?

So I watched the movie nearly a year ago and it scared the crap out of me but I've always wondered what happened to Mr. Harvey's wife. I thought maybe he killed her when he went crazy and then started raping + killing little girls but when I finally worked up the nerve to Google this today (you can't understand how seriously terrified I was of this movie) I found out that apparently he had a bad childhood or something? Well ok but where does that give him the right to start raping and killing little girls??!!!! Especially cuz I read online that apparently his mom was raped, or someone tried to rape her? After that you'd really think he would never even consider doing what he does! But anyway, my questions:



1. What exactly made him this crazy rapist + killer?

2. What happened to his wife? Did he kill her, or did she get sick, or etc.?

3. Anything else about him, like how he could go around raping + killing little girls after what happened to his mom?!

1.) His father was abusive towards him and his mother. One night when he was a child he and his mother were asleep in there truck I can't remember the reason why, some men came along and told her to get out of the truck, they made gestures like they were going to rape her so she told her son to start the engine while she pretended to get out of the truck, when he did she drove off running over one of the men and killing him. This is where Mr. Harvey's obsession with killing begin the man dying gave him a sick pleasure.

2.) He never had a wife, he made up stories about having a wife so people would think he was just a normal widower. He often changed the name of his wife when he moved towns.

3.) I don't know why he went round raping and killing girls but in the book you get the impression he just enjoys doing it like a secret hobby.
He was abused, physically, emotionally and sexually by his father.

Edit: It has to do with the brain. For example many loyal POWs are often brainwashed and are loyal to the country that imprisoned them.The Lovely Bones - what made Mr. Harvey crazy?
mr.harvey doesnt nor ever has had a wife
He was never married.

1. It's never revealed, but it's implied that he was abused as a child.

2. No wife. Ever. Some gross woman that he slept with (if you read the book you would get the whole story) but that's it.

3. Victims of abuse (his mother was the one who abused him if I remember correctly) are significantly more likely to become sexual predators themselves as adults. Mr. Harvey was part of this statistical group.


EDIT: Was it his father who abused him? Sorry, I haven't read the book or seen the movie in awhile. Meh. At least I'm sure it was a family member.
