and he has been eating it all weekend. she said that she has two friends that had dogs die due to "bone chips" damaging thier tummies and such.
i think thats a bunch of hogwash. the ham bone was in a doggie package and clearly meant for dog consumption.
the only bones i have heard not to feed yoru dog is chicken bones.
who is right? My office manager thinks its crazy that i bought my little min pin a huge ham bone?

The above link gives guidelines for feeding bones you have to be cautious when feeding bones, personally I do not give my dogs bones but the above link gives information on types of bones which are better than others and other information which you may find interesting
My dog has chewed on bones since she had teeth. Her favorite is a Mammoth Bone. It is sooooooooo HUGE. Never heard of a dog that died because of a bone - my final answer "Hogwash." :)My office manager thinks its crazy that i bought my little min pin a huge ham bone?
I would be more concerned about diarrhea and gas! Some dogs cannot handle this type of rich food on a bone, but if your dog is eating off this bone and having healthy bowels, then don't worry. It sounds like the bone is a shank or knuckle bone and these are pretty safe from splinters or bone chips.
If you are still concerned just supervise your dog while he is chewing on it!
There are some bones that are not safe for dogs to chew on as they can splinter and these tiny splinters can cause horrible damage and even death if not caught in time. Sterilized bones or knuckle bones are safer for dogs.
You are your manger must not know much about dogs chicken %26amp; TURKEY %26amp; small steak bones are dangerous have 3 datchshunds and did have 2 mini pins
I'm with you. I have a maltese who is just past teething stage but still has to be constantly gnawing on....well, anything. My sister was over the other day and, since we were leaving him alone, I went and got a new, HUGE rawhide for him and she cracked up!
I don't care - I feel safer giving him something large like that. I watched him practically inhale a tiny edible nylabone in about 15 seconds and that was all it took.
If your dog tolerates the pork, don't let people second guess you.
Actually dogs do die from bone chips they can splinter and pierce the stomach cavity. You should never feed a dog cooked bones as they have been dried out and splinter all the easier.
Raw bones are fine including chicken wings - a great way to clean your dogs teeth as well.
So if I was you I'd watch your dog for a few days and then get him onto better stuff for him like raw bones.
Good question though.
If the bone was packaged for a dog I would have to agree with you that it would be a safe ham bone to give to your dog. Ham bones are great for dogs although some ham bones can be the splintering type so if you give your dog a ham bone it is good to check to make sure it is not one that splinters, as it could harm your dog.
I also think that she is exaggerating a bit with having "2 friends that had dogs die" from bone chips from ham bones. I have a gazillion friends with dogs and have never heard of any that have died from eating a ham bone.
The dog should be ok. NEVER give a dog cooked bones of any kind because they will splinter when he eats them and can severly injure your dog and most likely kill him. Raw bones are safe and to stay extra safe, give them a big bone so they can't swallow small pieces or choke.
My take on it. First always buy american products - depending on where they come frrom some have been treated with chemical that are not good for your pet. I won't give my dogs a ham bone becuase of the way it has cooked it does break apart easily. I however have large dogs with very strong jaws who can break off large shards which could cause major probelms to the their systems. A small dog doesn't typically have that kind of jaw strength so i see nothing to worry about other then to keep an eye out and make your pup isn't breaking off large shards for his size. then I might take it away.
I bought one of these ham bones form the pet store - my dog got VERY sick - the bone is cooked (or in some way not raw) so it turned to a gluey mass in his gut, he was sick for a week and needed medicine to shift it - not a great product - I'd suggest a large cow leg bone sawn in half (RAW) - get it from a butcher - cheaper and safer.
no diarahrea?
I agree with all the "raw" bone advice. I personally prefer the huge bones for my Min Pin. I think I find security in the fact that she is so tiny, and has to chew the bone - whereas a chicken wing - I could see her scarfing it down.
My Min Pin always eats the biggies - and gosh does she try!
Don't worry about your office manager. People always have their advice for you. You're doing the right thing by getting more than one opinion.
Cheers
