I agree with getting a professional dog trainer involved. We've had pups that showed some food aggression, we started feeding everything by hand. Once that seemed fine we'd put small amounts in the dish and add more while he's eating, he came to see that a hand near his food just meant more food. I'd lay off bones, or anything that lasts, for a while. Once things seem more under control slowly bring them back. Teach your dog 'release' or 'drop it', 'give' whatever you like to call it. If he gives you his bone, immediately give him a treat then give is bone back. He'll figure that's a great deal, and won't think you're 'stealing' his food. Always show a calm demeanor and lots of patience.
Good Luck!
First No more bones!!How do you make a dog with food agression that nips and goes crazy when someone walks by him stop?
ANY aggression shown by ANY dog needs the help of a professional. if you don't know how to fix the problem yourself, you need to consult a trainer.
when you feed the dog or cat
try feeding the pet in one place and then don't let anyone walk by he/her while he is eating, this will give that dog/cat the freedom to eat in peace and he will thank you for it.
never give a dog bones it can hurt them in their stomach and make them really sick and even pincher their stomach and cause them to bleed.
Well dogs like this usually are put to sleep by the pound. They won't even let people adopt dogs like these.
I suggest taking him to a trainer. They'll know how to deal with him and give you suggestions.
All dogs are protective over their bones. Don't go near him when he is chewing his bone, just let him enjoy it.
That's totally unacceptable. ANY kind of aggression is. He needs to have intensive training to break him of this habit. You have to establish yourself as the pack leader and make him understand that you gave it to him and can take it at any time you it. Whatever "IT" is.
Guess you haven't done your homework. Unless you start paying more attention to your dog..i mean, attention to his behaviour and training.....it will get only worse.
Consult a professional trainer on this, NOT "experts" on Yahoo.
The only way to do this from the positive side is to keep presenting food or treats till he learns no one is gonna take them....hand him one...than another when he drops one pick it up and keep cycling them to him....
Definately Definately DEFINATELY take this dog to a trainer. You will not be able to do anything about this (unless you are a trainer...which in that case you wouldn't be asking this here, would you?). Lots of dogs go into rescues like this and they are able to get it out of them. This is something that needs to be fixed now especially if you have ANY children in or around your home.
a trainer really IS your best bet. If you feel like you MUST deal with it without a trainer, then consider this. dealing with a problem IN the problem is a confrontation. Confrontation is not a training tool, and neither is it the time to try training.
get a toy or object that your dog is not as invested in as he is in food, and start teaching him "drop it" and "leave it" commands. As he gets used to responding to those commands you're at least a step closer to being able to deal with food issues.
