In Islam, when a person dies, they will be punished in their graves, if they disbelieved.
However, if a person believes they will rejoice.
Then will be judged, and sent to HELL or HEAVEN..
I know, it sounds a bit to crazy, but it is the most rational way to understand, why we die?
How can we just become dust and bones?

People believe in life after death because it makes death seem less final - it doesn't make it true though.
Well, if you misspell constantly, your bones will actually turn to goo, and then Brahma will get his 20 pointed pitchfork and stab you repeatedly for each misspelling that you have graced us with. And then, Zeus will strike you with lightening for each time you have made a wrong conclusion to rational thinking to the death clock of living cells. We die because our body runs out of energy, same as every other animal. You're judged in life, by your family and peers. Your actions are reflected in the way you're treated by other people. There's no evidence to suggest life after death, but why should that make life unbearable? If anything, it makes this life that much sweeter.
My apologies I know you said atheist only, but here's what i feel of death. if god does not exist than death is nothing. you feel no pain no responsibility no stress. your never tired you are nothing. which with a slightly off viewpoint like mine means death sounds nice. the other alternative is heaven. which is so much nicer to believe
When you die ...you die. You rot and turn into a mush of guts and tissue that is eaten by bugs of various species. Then your bones slowly turn to calcium deposits and you no longer exist. It really is simple, if you want to see what happens to you when you die, the next time you find a dead animal on the road take it home and lay it in your back yard and watch it each day as it decomposes. You'll be able to see the different types of bugs that eat on it and then at night you may see a raccoon or opossum eating on the carcass. Anyway, enough of that fun, imagine that would be your body and now you have a better understanding of what happens to you when you die.
Like every other living thing. Only humans demand that their lives have cosmic significance. They don't have any trouble seeing that other animals just come into existence and then die, but for some reason humans can't accept that they're not special so they invent a grand significance for their own lives and imagine that they will exist forever.
Why should we explain ourselves? Believers are the ones who are demanding to be special.
I came into existence because my parents had sex.
We die because we are genetically programmed to have a finite lifespan.
All animals exist and then die

Nothing to explain. We die. We decompose. Our component molecules disperse back into the system.
That is the reality - claims of anything more need to be accompanied by clear evidence - something more than wishful thinking - so far absent!
Well, I know it's a hard concept, but dying is when you stop living. Tough, amirite?
It sucks, but unfortunately the fact that it sucks in itself is no reason to think it isn't true.

Unfortunately, the universe feels no obligation to organize itself in a way that satisfies humans' emotional needs.
We die because the body's repair mechanisms don't keep up with accumulated damage. It's that simple. There is no mystery. There is no need to make up mysteries about God and heaven and hell and punishment and the "significance" of death.
Because our bodies start rotting until they become dust and bones. How the hell does going into some magical place sound any more rational than that?
Matthew, even if heaven and hell exist, you STILL become worm food so that's a stupid answer.
You need to look up the word rational in the dictionary.. All religion is is an attempt to explain the unknown so it is easier to comprehend. Nobody alive knows why we die beyond the medical reasons, everyone is just pretending in order to feel better about their long dead brother or mother so they can sleep at night.
