What are your opinions on the character devolpment in Breaking Dawn? How they turned out?

I finished the book yesterday, and since I've browsed the internet to read reviews. Honestly, I was so worried everyone would say it was an amazing book, because it sure isn't, but I was pleased to see that readers agree that the book was untterly dissapointing.



Besides plot and writing skill, one big disappointment for me was the character development. I can easily say that I wasn't satisfied with one character's outcome in the conclusion.



Edward- Where was he? He seemed too much of a minor character in the book. Plus, he had many out of character moments, like when

***SPOILERS***

says something along the lines off "we need to get that 'thing' out of her", refereeing to when she gets pregnant. It's HIS baby, he is the FATHER, and he refers to it as a thing?

Another huge OOC (out of character) action is when he suggests Jacob get Bella pregnant.

Whoa, there!

That is completely unnecessary. He might as well have said, "Bella, honey, let's kill this half vampire half human baby. And afterwards, I promise you: we can replace it with a half human half dog baby you can enjoy making with Jacob."

Disgusting. Just plain disgusting.

And going backwards a bit, how can a guy like Edward, a guy that controls himself and sets so many rules throughout the previous three books, suddenly give in to Bella's seduction, after he BRUISED her entire body, nearly killed her, causing her so much pain? That is entirely OOC.



Bella- I was really unsatisfied with the way Bella鈥檚 character turns out. It annoyed me how everything was so easy for her. Being a crazy newborn? Nah, that would take up too many pages to write. Not seeing Charlie ever again? Don鈥檛 worry about it; he doesn鈥檛 even want to know! Jacob鈥檚 heartbreak? You got that one covered- he imprinted on your baby (plus that pretty much covers life insurance and any day care expenses. At least you鈥檒l be able to relax knowing there is someone out there who鈥檇 die for your baby in case you don鈥檛 want to or can鈥檛 save her.) Escaping the Volterri鈥檚 dangerous gifts? Well, you鈥檝e got a nifty little shield on your hands for that. So convenient, eh?



Rosalie- Wasn鈥檛 she coming around to Bella in Eclipse? They had a nice little chat, and Rosalie was warming up to Bella. So why did Meyer have to turn her into this crazy *****? Rosalie isn鈥檛 THAT nasty, people! No one can be so nasty! Everything she does and says in the book revolves around the fact that she has no interest in Bella鈥檚 well-being (for all she cared, Bella could die, causing Edward, Jacob, Bella鈥檚 family, and all the Cullens an eternity of grief ) but is devoted to the baby鈥檚 life. The mutant baby that makes Bella scream in agony and breaks her bones one by one. She鈥檚 a Cullen, for god鈥檚 sake! Are any of the Cullens, raised by Carlisle, THIS evil?



Emmett, Esme, Jasper- Emmett was totally non-existent in this book, except for some funny lines here and there, some entertaining scenes to lighten the mood. But Emmett isn鈥檛 just some comedian. I wish Meyer would show a different side of him, a more serious and deep side of him. He almost comes across as a dumb jock with his evil manipulating blonde cheerleading girlfriend. And Esme and Jasper didn鈥檛 really have parts either.



Alice- I HATED how she was so absent in the books. The whole J.Jenks sub-plot was a stupid idea. I was so sad that she ran off like that- and especially when the Cullens decided to believe she did it for her and Jasper鈥檚 well-being. That is so not like Alice. Abandoning her family and leaving Bella notes to go on a 100 page scavenger hunt that has no point by the end of the story.



Jacob- I always was a Jacob fan. But that doesn鈥檛 make my opinion biased. Even if I was an Edward fan, I know I鈥檇 still think the same of HIS part in the story.

I liked how the confrontation in Book One went with Bella at her wedding. For me, this was a scene similar to those of Eclipse, a scene that seemed appropriate for the book. And don鈥檛 get me wrong, Book Two was my favorite part of the book. Reading in his point-of-view was refreshing and entertaining, and I wished Book Three would have been in his POV too, which brings me to this: In Book Three, his character was completely lost. I wished Meyer would have at least written his imprinting on Renesmee in his POV more, because I didn鈥檛 understand that. Of course for Meyer, it was an easy way to solve the love triangle, but it didn鈥檛 satisfy me one bit. It fell into place too easily. It left me wondering, Could Jacob really have fallen right out of love with Bella? Could he possible see Bella in Renesmee and that鈥檚 why he imprinted? Did he not care of Bella any more? Is that the end of the Jacob vs. Edward that should have had a better outcome? How could Meyer throw away his love for Bella after so many pages of his devotion to her? I love Jacob鈥檚 character, he seems the only sane one, especially in Book Two. But his character got lost, and perhaps this is the most disappointing thing for me.



The foreign vamps and Voulteri- SOOOO boring. Sure, at first it was cool. But it was 100 pages of historical conversation and stories and descriptions. Who cares? All we readers wanted to find out was how Jacob, Bella, and Edward鈥檚 problems would be resolved, and realistically speaking, this meant that it couldn鈥檛 be a happy ending (but who knew Meyer would throw in a mutant baby capable of being imprinted on). Yes, throwing the J.Jenks plot could have potentially been good meat, but it ended up being completely raw. And sure, the Volterii鈥檚 appearance was cool and I anticipated a fight where at least some of the loved characters should have died (not some nobody Irina that readers probably already despised for playing tattle-tale on the Cullens). But no, they ended up leaving with peace. Although that chapter wasn鈥檛 bad on a count that it was a rollercoaster of punishing them or not punishing them, the decision kept going back and forth which created excitement and anticipation for me.

I felt like EVERYONE was out of character. Especially Bella. She was the Bella we knew during the wedding, with her usual fears about her clumsiness, meeting Tanya, standing next to Edward, etc. But later, I felt I couldn't relate or understand her at all. I was suprised she called Rosalie too, I see how Rosalie would understand, but I think she should have called Alice instead, I mean Alice was her bestfriend, and Alice would have done what Rosalie did (which was defend her and the baby). I was disapointed with how little we got to hear about Jasper, Alice, Carlisle, and Esme. I could see Emment with those sex jokes though, I don't think that was too out of place. There were many disspointments, but I still loved the book. The only things that really really got to me were the name Renesmee (ew!), Jacob's POV, no fight scence, and minimal sweet moments with Edward and Bella. I loved when they were SWEET not HORNY, but I guess that's just a part of them 'growing' up.

I went though a roller coaster of love vs. hate of this book.



When I first began reading, I was really shocked that Bella was so out of character. I can't put my finger on exactly everything that bugged me, but her getting pregnant was my biggest problem with the book. It completely confused me. All of a sudden, Bella was insane and her thoughts were revolving around this baby, instead of Edward. I think she even mentioned wanting to not become a vampire, which completely contradicted what she's been wanting and thinking about for the whole series! And i totaly missed Jacob imprinting on Renesmee until Bella was screaming at him about it.



%26amp; I agree about the J. Jenks subplot. It was ridiculous, and wasn't even needed. What was the point? I DON'T GET IT!



I think Meyer just wrote an ending to write an ending.

She really didn't satisfy me.



BUT, i was happy she stayed with Edward even though he became a different character too.
I loved it! except for the part in jacobs eyes i dunno why but i hated that part. Here is the way i see the characters. *SORRY ITS WAAAAAAY LONG*



Bella- It was like she was born to be a vampire. In the previous books it was constantly mentioned that Bella was NOT a normal human, she didnt click well with teenagers and her best friend was her mom because probably only because she had been with her mom her whole life. Yet somehow she immediately clicked with all of the cullen family (minus rosalie), coincidence? NO! it was because she was not ment to be human but to be a vampire. Thats why i was perfectly fine with the fact that she was able to deal so well with being a vampire... because thats what she was supposed to be. She had a harder time being human and it came unnaturally to her but as a vampire that was wat she was ment to be so it wasnt nearly as hard. See, u have to flip it, if she had gone from vampire to human she probably would have had a harder time than any other vampire would if they became human.



Edward- I dont think he was OOC at all! if fact i think it showed his character even more. Think about it, all he saw was that he had done something that was causing bella to die. He just thought of it as a monster that HE had created and it was killing the thing he loved most. He loved bella so much that he would do ANYTHING to save her. But then when he heard Renesmee's thoughts and how she thought he immediately realized that it was not a monster at all but just misunderstood and from then on he loved her.



Rosalie- she was NOT warming up to Bella in Eclispe, she just wanted Bella to see why she didnt think she should become a vampire and why she didnt like her. She knew that it was unfair that she didnt like her for no apparent reason so she told bella why- she was jealous that bella had everything that she wanted and was throwing it away. She even admits that she doenst know if her dislike for her will go away. Just because bella now see's Rosalies opinion does not mean Rosalie will just suddenly start liking bella. THen in Breaking dawn she was just herself, wanting what she couldnt have and that was why she wanted, or needed, Renesmee to be born. Rosalie was not evil, just selfish and thats how shes always been so i dont think her personality changed.



Esme, Emmet, Jasper- None of them are main characters and they never have been. Stephenie cant make EVERY single character have a leading part or else it would have been a 2,000 page book rather then a 700 and something page book. Emmet showed his true personality, and u were the one saying all these different characters personalities changed and now u want Him to have a different personality? THeres nothing really to do because thats him and thats how he will stay. he was the comic relief of the family and thats how he always has been. Same with esme and Jasper, the book lingers on the fact that jasper is exasperated that bella has odd emotions and thats about all his character was needed for. As for Esme, what did u want... her to start flying around in tights and a leotard to save the day? She has no powers and is just compationate and thats what she was in the book. She cried when alice left and carried for everyone and thats exactly the only thing she was supposed to do.



Alice- She was Absent for only like 1/5 of the book and it gave it a twist. It was necessary for the climax of the book. Thats what made it seem SO dangerous because everyone (including the reader) thought that there was no hope at all. Thats what made it all seam so scary- that alice would abandon her own family because it was so dangerous. The whold J. Jenks thing was needed too because Alice herself knows that her visions arent set and even if she had seen a shred of hope (which she obviously did) she knew that things could still go wrong and she needed a backup plan just in case. You wouldnt walk across a tightrope that was 50 feet above the ground without a safety net, even if you thought you could make it across right? Also i think it was needed because if Stephenie Meyer hadn't added it then bella would have had no human contact besides charlie. The whole j jenks thing showed her self control and that she looked like the cullens had in the cafeteria to her on the first day of school.



Jacob- Imprinting is strong. Remember how sam and leah thought that they were absolutely in love? well they were wrong because emily is obviously perfect for sam. The same thing happened. Of course jacob still loves bella but its just not in the same way. It is more of a brother-sister way now. I dont agree with you about his character being lost because he is there in all of the fights, with renesmee, and is in the thick of everything that happens. He still is himself and he still see's bella as the same bella as ever just now he doesnt love her in the same way.



The Foreign Vampires/Voulteri- I think that they foreign vamps were there to show some of the history and powers of other vampires since we only know of a few covens. but i think that the voulteri didnt seem as dangerous as they should have. i mean they just gave up like that and only killed Irena. In my opinion i was glad that none of the cullens had died (like in The last harry potter i hated it becuase jk. rowling killed so many good characters that i just got pissed) but i think they could have gone for a better character to kill. Maybe Seth or maybe even Charlie. But Leaving the Cullens in tact was good i thought.



So in the end despite all of the complaints i've been hearing about the book I LOVED IT! because Dont even pretend like u didnt want a happy ending! I think that it was perfect, im only sad that its over so soon and there arent 3 more books that i get to look forward to.
I liked how they turned out. And no, I don't think the book was a disappointment. I enjoyed it and was pleased with the outcome.



You think people are actually going to read all of that, lol. You could have shortened it up a bit...

i thought that it was funny when Edward asked jacob to get bella pregant the reason why he did not want her to have the baby was because it would kill her it did basicaly if no vampire was there she would have died i just thought how bella reacted to jacob imprinting on nessie was stupid she should have understand i think she was mad because she enjoyed jacob n edward fighting for her love n when he imprinted on nessie she did not have that anymore
I thought she totally ruined all the characters. I always liked Rosalie, and then she turned her into a stupid *****. She turned Emmett into a character that only pops up to make sex jokes. Bella was ridiculously vain and cocky, Jacob was funny but turned into a total paedophile, and Edward was his usual annoying self. I hardly even remember any scenes with Alice, Jasper, Esme and Carlisle.
God i completely agree. One thing i just realised though, Rosalie was the evil, evil woman while Bella was pregnant and was made out to be the worst person in the book then, as soon as the baby was born SUDDENLY there was no problem there! WHAT WAS UP WITH THAT?!?! Right actually, i'm going to ask that now.
Ok well I totally agreed with you about Jacob Falling out of love(if that makes sense) with Bella. And the thing you said about Emmett about him seeming like a dumb jock with a blonde ***** as a wife Is totally true in my POV. Emmett was way better in the first 3 books. But at the same time, I think that Breaking Dawn was the best one yet. But honestly, what do i know, I'm only 12. Most people even think that i'm too young to have read those 4 books.
