She must be about 15 or 16 now. (We got her from the shelter 2 years ago.) We have 3 other cats, one the same age, one 3 and one 2. None of the others are thin. She is a bit older, and she is sitting next to me and purring like crazy, like always, I even need to turn up the TV. I was wondering if this means anything? Obviously, I shouldn't be able to feel her bones. They are well fed, and cared for.
Any insight would be great. Thanks! My cat has lost a lot of weight, where I can now feel the bones in her back. :(?
At that age it could be a number of things - and all easily treatable - by the vet! It could be a bad tooth, hyperthyroidism (very common in older cats) or kidney issues. No, you shouldn't be able to feel her bones. Call the vet tomorrow first thing, and get her seen.
Hi honey,
This is exactly what happened to my babe, 1 and 3 months. She died of kidney failure, and she was pregnant too :(
Kidney failure tends to happen in older cats, and because my kitty was so young i never really realised, she was always thin too.
Take her too the vets, tomorrow! I left it, and then my babe's back legs went, and she couldnt walk. Your cat may start drinking lots too.
Take her too the vets, don't make the dicisions i did .
And don't pay attention to the first answerer, thats sick.
Good luck, thinking of your cat!
XMy cat has lost a lot of weight, where I can now feel the bones in her back. :(?
Healthy weight for an older cat is when you can feel her ribs, but not see them.
She is eating well, and in good health :)
If you begin to be able to see her ribs, that is when you have cause to worry.
Also, when cats get older, they tend to lose weight.
well if it is this bad i don't think you should be asking yahoo! answers... call the vet or something. this could get worse if you are waiting for strangers pretend to be vets. just make the call to your local vet. because you know you can talk face to face with a professional animal expert
it is sometimes a sign of thyroid problems. Go to the vet -they might decide to take blood to test this. If it is the thyroid, this can be controlled with pills, but the vet will be able to help you more if he/she can examine your cat fully.
take her to the vet, or, it could mean somethings going to happen to someone! i seen it on a show when this girls was dying and her cat purred then she died, the cat new she was dying! but that may not be the case (saw it on discovery channel)
You should take her to the vet for a checkup. It could just be her age or there could be a number of things wrong that need to be addressed. Only a vet could tell you what is going on. Do it so that the cat remains comfortable.
Time to pick the spot in the yard where she's going, it's the big litter box in the sky for her very soon.
(16 is like 80+ for cats).
Mine had a kidney infection, sounds like the same symptoms. Vet said it could be a simple infection, or some bigger kidney disease. Does your cat drink a lot of water lately?
I would try feeding her more. Make sure you have high quality cat food. If she doesn't get any fatter, then there has to be something wrong.
Take her to the vet if she doesn't gain weight.
well you need to take her to the vet! this probably means she is pregnant because when a woman is pregnant she stopps eating!
well if she purrs, that is good...
take her to the vet...?
umm how about a vet
Has this just come about suddenly? meaning in the past few weeks or so,any weight loss in an older cat needs to be investigated as soon as possible as there are many causes so she will need tests,
when my cat was 15 she went very skinny i could feel all her bones it turned out she had kidney failure very common in elderly cats, and she didn't show other symptoms until last of all and that was excessive drinking,
but by then it was to late to start treatment for her so i lost her,so please don't delay as if she does have kidney problems it can be controlled with tablets and a special diet, but only if caught early enough,
but only the vet can tell you for sure whats wrong so don't delay.
ok, seriously, your cat is not pregnant. this is your sign that kitty has a problem related probably to her age, you need to go to vet for blood work and have them do a chem panel and CBC. she could have something like failing kidneys (most common) which can't be stopped but sometimes slowed down. the sooner you get her to the vet, the better chance you have to keep her around for awhile. waiting even a month in cat time is like years for her to get worse. DO NOT feed her more or fattier foods, this is not going to help but probably make it worse. The vet can suggest a food that is for older cats that will be better, or atleast start to wean her to a food for mature cats 12+. you may have to separate the older cats at feeding time, no big deal, just don't leave other foods laying around. older cats need different care just like we do when we get old, and each will age differently.
