Proper exercise for a high energy puppy?

I have a 5 month old portuguese water dog with A LOT of energy, and I was looking for advice on ways to give him proper exercise.

We take him for a walk everyday and he likes to run around the backyard, but I want to make sure we're not being too hard on his developing bones and joints.

Is running ok for him? He loves to run back and forth between my husband and I when we call him. Is that ok? Or can running hurt him? If we don't give him a lot of exercise during the day he is CRAZY at night.Proper exercise for a high energy puppy?
Keep him busy and wear him out mentally. Basic commands you need your puppy to learn and how to teach them. First things first http://www.teachingpuppies.com/reading-y鈥?/a>

Running back and forth whilst you call him is great! keep it up he will love you for it. Just make sure he is not running up and down stairs until at least one yr old as this is bad for his hips.
don't let your dog run to much because he can get hurt.

make your dog swim

play with your dog for example play fetch but don't over do it because your will run a lot while he fetches and he might get hurt.

if your make your dog run don't make your dog run for more then 2 hours a day because that will overdue it

walk your dog a lotProper exercise for a high energy puppy?
A puppy is actually not supposed to run a whole lot until they are at least one year old and yes, running can damage the growth of their joints and bones.

A little bit of bouncing from a puppy is normal (as that is what they do) but full on running is not good.

To wear a dog out, it is not only about physical stimulation, it is also about mental stimulation. The right amount of both mental and physical make for a happy dog. Too much of one or the other can either hurt them (like running too much when they are puppies) or make them anxious because they feel they are missing something (which they are without the right amount of each).

This website explains forms of mental stimulation for your dog:

The running back and forth wont hurt him. Just be sure he isnt running extended periods of time, as that can be hurtful on his joints. If you want to start running him for extended periods, I would recomend waiting til he is about 1 year old.
Proper exercise is actually very good for puppies, as long as they have time to rest, and have plenty of water to drink. This breed of dog loves to swim, and ideally this would be the perfect addition to add to his routine if possible. If he goes on long walks with you also, it will help him be more relaxed in your home. I hope this info. helps.
Instead of running him a lot why not practice agility? Agility courses are very good exercise for the mind and body and don't put as much pressure on the joints of the pup like running does.

You can also take him swimming. Hydrotherapy is great for larger dogs. It doesn't put stress on the joints but still gives a great work out.

Play hide and seek with him. Have your husband hide with a treat and you and your dog try to find him. It will help your dogs sense of smell and exercise his mind while giving his body low impact exercise.

Wait on running intensively until he's at least a year or year and a 1/2 old.
